carouse - podictionary 622
When I think of people carousing my personal definition fits fairly well with The Concise Oxford English Dictionary definition which says that to carouse is to: drink alcohol and enjoy oneself with others in a noisy, lively way But more than that, I picture in my minds eye a group of people stumbling happily from bar to bar. Theres a sense of motion to carouse as well as a sense of drinking and partying. I see that Urbandictionary has got this all wrong. Whoever put the entry in there seems to have confused carouse with caress and arouse. Id have thought a web resource with such a heavy drinking demographic would have caught this mistake. But then I went to see in the Sketchengine corpus”that database of words”whether there was a sense of approval or disapproval surrounding the word carouse. Im not sure I saw either, but what I did see was support for my feeling that there was a sense of motion to carousing. I saw several examples in there where writers had used the word carouse not to mean drinking at all, but to mean motion instead. In one case children were said to have caroused through the house with unstoppable stamina and somewhere else Sir Richard Branson is described on a ski trip to Aspen carousing down the powdery slopes. To be sure these examples are the minority. All the dictionaries talk of carousing as drinking and none give that sense of trajectory, and by far most of the corpus examples fit with the dictionary definitions. So this is too slight evidence to proclaim a change in meaning for carouse, but I wonder. The word carouse first appeared in 1567 when William Shakespeare was just three; too young to carouse. But to carouse has undoubtedly always meant to drink since it is in fact a contraction of a German phrase gar-aus trinken that means all out drinking. By all out drinking they dont seem to mean necessarily putting your full all out effort into your drinking, but instead, as the American Heritage Dictionary explains, the sense is that at closing time when the bartender tells everyone to get out, drinkers are forced to quickly drain their glass. So the all out drinking is this chugging. One of the citations from the Oxford English Dictionary caught my eye was from one of our favorite dictionary makers Dr. Johnson. When he wasnt writing his dictionary he also wrote about the lives of English poets and one of those was a guy named James Thomson. According to Samuel Johnson in this citation James Thomson was invited to Marlborough Castle, the estate of Lord and Lady Hertford. Lady Hertford fancied herself a bit of a poet too and wanted some tips from James Thomson, but Dr. Johnson tells us, instead Thomson went carousing with Lord Hertford and so never got invited back. I see from the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography though that Samuel Johnson was only partly right in this. Thomson seems to have visited Marlborough Castle repeatedly over more than a decade and also to have traded rhymes with her ladyship throughout. But Thomson was indeed an expert carouser with repeated tales of all night binges and an evidently higher concern for drinking all out than for managing his money. Fortunately for him he seemed to drink (and write poetry) with the right crowd and many”including the Queen and Prince of Wales”bailed him out from time to time.

“Skiing 7 Summits” trailer
“Skiing 7 Summits” trailerbvirc5 min - Mar 5, 2007The film »Skiing 7 Summits« features a story about a first-ever skiing expedition to the 7 highest mountains of all continents, including the first ski descent from Mt. Everest. Slovenian extreme skier Davo Karni?ar, the first man ever to accomplish such a feat, completed this project in December 2006.
His extraordinary skiing descent from Mt. Everest in year 2000 has likewise not been repeated yet. Other skiers, including Kit DesLauriers, managed to ski only sections of the descent or were either assisted by rappelling or carried their skis on foot across the cruxes of the route.

Skiing at the end of the world: Southern Argentina has become a real option for northern tourists who want to go skiing on their summer vacation - Style of Life: Travel

Filed under: Skiing — Administrator @ 3:19 am

Thanks to the Secretariat of Tourism of Argentina, which has developed the “Argentina is Better” program, the slopes of Argentina’s south have been attracting more upper- and upper-middle class people who are keen on the sport. These people not only go skiing when it is winter in their countries, but also travel to New Zealand or Australia in summer. But that is because they are unaware of the first-rate skiing centers in South America, says Argentine Secretariat of Tourism spokesman Juan Pablo Reynal.

“At present Argentina has only between 5 and 7 percent” of the global skiing market in the summer months, says Reynal. “We intend to capture between 25 and 30 percent of the market in two years.”

In order to lure skiers south, the Secretariat is launching a marketing campaign that combines the state’s efforts with those of the country’s main ski resorts. In addition to visiting the principal ski fairs in the US, the government has also set up a call center to offer a direct sale service. In the end, however, the biggest lure will be the destinations themselves, especially Las Lenas Valley and Bariloche.
