“In order to set up a micro-hydro electric system, you need to have a storage pond up high and you need to run a 10- to 12-inch pipe underground, which is enormously expensive,” said Aspen Skiing Company director of environmental affairs Auden Schendler. “We realized we had it in place already: It’s called a snowmaking system.”

According to Rocky Mountain News, the project, which is expected to be completed later this year, involves the diversion of melted snow in the springtime through the pipes of the snowmaking system to a newly developed powerhouse featuring a turbine that will turn a generator to produce what is initially expected to be approximately 250,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity.
